Every day is different and brings with it new and exciting challenges. There are different types of Reps you can become. Above and beyond the key responsibilities of a holiday rep the are additional requirements go hand in hand with the daily duties depending as wich type of holiday rep you like to work.
Holiday Reps: Allround entertainer
The allround entertainer – he was also known as Family Rep, Resort Rep, Club Rep – is responsible for the daytime activities and sports games. In general, this are:

- table games (for example, card games, Craps, ect … )
Sure you need to have a gift for sports. To put sports and games into practice are not the only important fact for the daily activity of the entertainer, but also rules of the games he has to know and must explain them to the guests – if necessary, also in the appropriate foreign languages. You have the opportunity to learn a local language, but all extra languages you would speak are of course an advantage.
The allround entertainer is always present and is in direct contact with the adult guests. So he is the personal point of contact for most of the holidaymakers. In addition, experience in moderation are desired and the ability to deal with the microphone expected.
Children’s rep: Kids & Teen entertainer
Tourist entertainment especially for
With a lot of creativity and a lot of imaginationthe entertainer for kids and teens has to form the never-to-be-forgotten holiday. Any experience in to look after kids, completed an internship for example, is helpful for the work in this field of the tourist entertainment, sometimes even condition. For some hotels kid’s and teen’s entertainer has to fulfil the condition about a completed vocational training as an educator or teacher. In this holiday clubs or hotels qualification in childcare is essential for anyone wanting to work as a children’s rep.
Fitness instructor as sports entertainer
Although a fitness instructor works in the fields of work of the allround entertainer, too, it belongs to the real tasks of the sports entertainer to put up fitness programs and to work out with guests.
Either a sports study or education as group fitness instructor and essential licenses of aerobics, step aerobics, water gymnastics and other fitness programs are. Who would like to work as a group fitness instructor under the sun, must bring a lot of condition and has to be fit.
Sound & Light entertainer as DJ & VJ
The Sound & Light Entertainer should already have experience or passed an appropriate training in the field of work with floodlight and sound exposure of events, especially on stage. In addition to light and sound equipment he is also working as a DJ in disco at night.
He need to have a good ear for music, have to be an electrically trained person and loves to work with the music are the most important principles for a successful season as sound & light entertainer.
There are no pure ’stage entertainer‘. Because all the entertainers meeting point in the evenings is on the stage. Stagecraft and dramaturgical skills are required here.
However some of the hotels are hiring professional dancers, whose main purpose is to perform in professional dance shows. This is based on a relevant experience with dance before or a professional training as a choreographer, dancer, dance teacher, dance therapist or other dance profession.
Other kind of position for holiday reps
Sure there are still more tourist jobs abroad. And stage decorator, dresser are also possible fields of work, specialised skills demand. In some hotels an entertainer organizes cultural excursions into the surrounding countryside and the guests are accompanied on its tours (similar to a tour guide). There are more specialist jobs for holiday representatives, like campsite reps, whose duties include erecting and dismantling tents or ski reps (to mention winter sports entertainment also) and reps specialising in other sports and activities. The qualifications you’ll need depend on what kind of position you are seeking. Water sports entertainer or ski instructor needs specific training and licenses.
Working hours and stage performance
There is a lot more interesting, what was not mentioned in the previous categories, but in any case should be mentioned. Regardless of which of different types of holiday reps you would like to work (kids club, alrounder, fitnesstrainer,…) so for this job you need to have a gift for sports. But all of the working fields of entertainers have something in common: that the work does not end with the sunset.
When the sun goes down
Doing the evening entertainment is part of your job. In addition to instructing a daily programme you will participate in a programme of evening activities, too. Some renowned hotels and resorts attach great importance to stage entertainment, quality of stage show and performance on stage, the organisation of an evening program. No matter in which area has been worked on during the day, in the evening, almost all the entertainers together again at work on the stage. The spectrum is broad and, as has already been pointed out, also depends on the quality of the evening entertainment – and therefore the claim to the entertainer – from its patently obvious that and the approach. The bandwidth looks like this:
- Simple entertainment games *
- funny sketch evenings *
- demanding dance shows *
- first class musicals *
Some hotels working together with external agencies. They book dance groups and entertainers for the shows during the evening program. In such cases, the entertainers are rare even on stage. I know from experience, that many holiday reps have chosen their jobs, after they have already met a hotel – as a guest. Toward the end of the holiday, some of the guests has tended this idea.
What to expect
Simply to deceive with the entertainer and to extend the holiday as a payed tourist entertainer. Work under the sun, always good-humored guests and a lot of fun. However, those who have never worked in the entertainment team as holiday rep, perhaps find it difficult to imagine that behind the dream job are quite a lot of hard work. Because good mood on demand is not as simple as it seems. Who did not have this possibility, to visit a future working place as a guest, can read carefully travel brochures or check on the Internet about the possible workplace. And do this before you send you application. Because catalog descriptions or the websites of the hotels reflect the style of the entertainment. And so it gives you information about the sTyler of evening shows quite well.
Spirit and purpose of the job as holiday rep
That’s the general idea to work as an entertainer abroad
Some people think that time spent abroad – in the form of traineeship or seasonal work – is best way to improve chances. And to better oneself. But also some people mean, to work as a holiday rep in an entertainment team offers just chances for those, who will work later in tourism. However, I worked abroad and I used it for me to acquire new knowledge. And new skills. As well as to get to know and become acquainted with different cultures.
Success and Chances
Because in the school I learned to read and write a foreign language it was simpler to understand spoken language. And speaking the language, too. In our globalized world is the understanding of and interaction with other cultures quite important. But that people of different cultures have another way to think, to act and to live. That is something brings you face to face every day if you work in the tourism. Because Holiday representative not onlys look after international guests, but also usually they work in a multicultural team. I learned something really new. And I was able to take advantag. This has taken also a not low influence on my personality. In short, the most important factors, are:
- language skills (knowledge of a language or languages)
- intercultural competence and understanding for other cultures
- refinement of interpersonal communication and social interaction
